Empire Group Hosts 30th Annual Golf Classic

On behalf of the Empire Group , we would like to offer our sincere thanks to everyone who participated in our Annual Golf Classic on October 4 ^th at the beautiful Galen Hall Golf Club in Wernersville, PA. It’s hard to believe this marked the 30th year of the tournament!

Although this was Empire Group's first time hosting the event at this historic venue, they have deep roots at Galen Hall — affiliate Empire Services demolished the original Galen Hall Hotel back in 1963 following a devastating fire. Since then, the golf club has remained a local landmark, known for its scenic views and welcoming atmosphere.

Despite the cool early morning, 99 golfers were warmed up and ready for the 8 AM shot gun start leading to some fun but competitive golfing. After the final putt dropped, everyone gathered for the award ceremonies, followed by a hearty lunch. Shout out to the winners of all categories and the raffle!

On July 6th, 2025, Kutztown University’s South Dining Hall’s water main broke. This break caused the dining hall to flood. Although Delaware Valley University did not have a water main break in November 2022, the facility needed a water main system upgrade due to the addition of new bathrooms. Every year, the month of June is recognized as Trench Safety Month. Founded by the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA), this campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of trenching and excavation work. For industries involved in construction, utilities, and civil engineering, this month serves as a powerful reminder that safe trenches save lives. So why does a month need to be dedicated to it?

Keeping Trenches Safe

Trenching and excavation are among the most hazardous activities in the construction and utility industries. A trench collapse (or cave-in) can bury workers in mere seconds. One square yard of soil equals over 3,000 pounds, which can easily crush or suffocate a worker.

Alarming Trench Safety Statistics:

1 in 5 worker fatalities in construction is related to excavation or trenching.
80% of trench deaths occur in trenches less than 10 feet deep.
Lack of protective systems is the leading cause of fatal trench collapses.

We can reduce these statistics by increasing training on trenching and excavation safety practices. To help prevent a collapse, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) states the focus should be on the three S’s for trenches five feet deep or deeper: Slope or bench walls, shore the walls with supports, or shield trench walls with trench boxes. For trenches four feet deep, employers must provide ladders, steps, ramps, or other means of leaving the trench. Thus, employers must ensure there is a clear trench entrance and exit.

What Is Trench Safety Month All About?

Nine years ago, NUCA launched Trench Safety Month promoting trench safety awareness by providing critical training and driving accountability. It’s supported by OSHA’s Trench Safety Stand Down, where employers and workers take a break to focus solely on trench safety education. The theme of this year’s Trench Safety Stand Down is “Get People Home.” The goal is getting people home at the end of the day through the key objectives of Trench Safety Month:

Promote trenching and excavation safety standards.
Educate crews on soil types, protective systems, and hazards.

Our team recently replaced a 15kv 1/0 primary wire that was moled under a parking lot in Lakewood, New Jersey. The New Jersey team dug “locates” in the asphalt to ensure they didn't hit any utility lines, to guide the mole underground, and to maintain the proper depth in the ground to install the wire. Below, the mole is pulling the mule tape through and at right, the crew is at the locate waiting for the mole to come through.

No Perc: Switching from Septic to Sewer

When purchasing a home, one of the crucial questions people ask is if it uses a septic tank or public sewer. It's an important question since not everyone is comfortable dealing with the upkeep of a septic tank. Aside from the cost of having the tank pumped every three to five years, there is the concern of a failure turning the lawn into a foul-smelling puddle. Many homeowners prefer a sewer system since the city (or municipality) is responsible for making any repairs and resolving issues concerning the connections to the road. However, the switch from septic to sewer may be unavoidable if the septic field is old and no longer passes the perc (or percolation) test. This was the case with a recent DVUC project.

While the customer's on-site septic tank had been a viable solution for the home for many years, the septic field could no longer pass the perc test. Thus, the switch from a septic tank to a sewer system was made.

Solebury School Needs a New Sanitary Force Main System

No matter the size of the school, the sanitary force main system plays a vital role in ensuring waste and wastewater are transported to a wastewater treatment plant without the threat of backing up or leaking. Where gravity helps move the waste and wastewater through the pipes to a wastewater treatment plant, a force main utilizes a pump station to pump or force waste through the pipes because of the low elevation. Equipment theft, from stealing generators to excavators, amounts to around $1 billion dollars annually in terms of direct and indirect costs. To help safeguard your equipment, here are the top five tips on keeping equipment where it belongs.

1. Go Low Tech – When we say low tech, we mean the things you can do that do not cost a lot of money. Keeping your job site well-lit is a good theft deterrent. Thieves look for dark areas on a site to move around in as well as for maneuvering the equipment. Adding a fence is another way to protect your site. You want to make sure there is no easy access to your site during off-hours.

2. Put Up a Virtual Barrier – Geofencing has become popular for protecting equipment. It’s software that creates a virtual fence around your site. It can alert you via your smartphone when your equipment or materials have entered or exited the job site.

3. Provide a Job Site Box – If applicable, tools should be locked up in a safe and secure place. A job site storage box is a valuable solution.

4. Keep Records – It’s important to document all your equipment not only inventory purposes, but also for insurance requirements. There should be a record for each piece, which includes the make, model, serial number, PIN, purchase date, and production date. It’s also important to take pictures of your equipment. It’s another way to prove ownership if any of the numbers are unreadable.

5. Register Your Equipment – Along with documenting your equipment, you should also register it (e.g., National Equipment Register ). The register can aid law enforcement in the recovery and returning of the stolen items.

Why Does a Force Main Need to Be Upgraded?

Whether you are a business owner or a township manager, no one likes to hear that their force main needs to be upgraded. Many assume the upgrade is due to the age of the pump station, which is not always true. There are several reasons why an upgrade is warranted. Let’s take a look at a few.

Age. Some things age well, but not piping systems. Not only is the age of the pipes a concern, but also the material of the pipes, such as steel, ductile iron, and cast iron. Pipes can corrode over time and have a buildup of mineral deposits, which affect the pipe’s structural integrity causing a hole or blockage. For example, an acid attack can corrode a pipe when hydrogen sulfide gas converts to sulphuric acid when moisture is present. Also, a buildup of minerals can cause abrasion, wearing down the interior creating a crack or hole.

Capacity. When a business increases its square footage with an addition, there can be an increase in volume that may be too much for the system (e.g., septic system) to handle. Thus, a new force main station is needed.

Broken Pipe. Aside from age and corrosion, there are other r easons for a pipe to burst or break. Freezing is a common reason, especially in certain parts of the U.S. A pipe can freeze when the water temperature drops below 32° F, which turns into ice. As the ice expands, the increased pressure causes a pipe to burst. Tree roots are another culprit. They elongate and gravitate toward a water source. As soon as roots enter a pipe, they begin to divide rapidly. When this happens, a blockage forms inside the pipe, which can cause it to burst. The roots can also grow around a pipe exerting enough pressure to crush it.

At DVUC, we have upgraded force mains due to these reasons, especially capacity. We recently upgraded a force main system for a large trucking repair shop in Burlington, New Jersey. The new addition to the shop would cause an increase in volume, which would be too much for the onsite septic system to handle. Thus, a small force main pump station was required.

Delaware Valley University Gets an Upgraded Water Main System

It disrupts lives and can damage property when a water main breaks. Water mains that need updating can be just as frustrating. Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, PA, upgraded its water main system to due to increased volume from new bathrooms and an irrigation system located near the stadium. The existing water main system ran from the parking lot to the athletic field.

It was important to the university that the parking lot be disturbed as little as possible. The solution was drilling 400 feet horizontally down the lot. This was the only disturbance since it was summer break. During the horizontal directional drilling, they utilized the JT 30 drill rig and a vac machine to keep the area clean. They fused over 400 feet of a 4-inch HDPE pipe on site. Below is a breakdown of the project.

Installing a Force Main Station in a Challenging Location

Force mains are a vital part of our lives since these pipelines are a critical connection between the pump station and collection/treatment facility. We recently installed one for a large trucking repair shop in Burlington, New Jersey. As the architects and engineers planned out the new addition for the shop, it was decided that an increase in volume would be too much for the onsite septic system to handle. Thus, the engineers designed a small force main pump station to be installed.

The pump station was placed at the side of the building and the 1.25 HDPE force main pipe was installed 300 feet across the property and 600 feet down the shoulder of the road to an existing manhole. Crossing the property was very challenging due to a large 24-inch high pressure gas main, a protected wetland, and a 1-to-1 vertical slope up 35 feet to the road. Below is step-by- step process of the installation.

We have the capabilities of drilling under roadways without impacting traffic flow as well as under bodies of water (e.g., streams, rivers, and wetlands) and we can drill under existing utilities which may prevent open trenching. Our directional drill teams are professionally trained in utility locating and monitoring of our directional drill heads to insure we hit the correct location. We utilize state-of -the-art horizontal directional drilling equipment which allows us to be efficient in our drilling work. Our directional drill teams can perform HDPE pipe fusing of pipe sizes from 1” to 24” diameter pipe, allowing us to drill and install the pipe at the same time thus reducing lost time and the number of subcontractors.

DVUC Expands their Fleet

Delaware Valley Utility Contractors has provided air excavation services for several years for utility locating, bulk excavation in remote areas, excavation for fence posts and utility poles. We are happy to announce a new service we will be providing for 2021, “hydro-excavation”. We have purchased a new Gapvax HV-56 hydro-excavating truck. This unit carries 1000 gallons of water, has the tank capacity for 15 cubic yards of debris, has a 5250 CFM blower, has a 400,000 BTU burner for heating of water for excavating frozen ground, and has 4000 PSI water pump feeding the hand wand. This unit allows for safer excavating around existing utilities such as electric, communications, gas and fiber optic. Utilizing water as a source for digging has less impact and ensures a cleaner work area. More and more utility owners are requiring either air or hydro-excavation around their utilities to decrease the chances of striking their utility.

Using a hydro-excavator reduces the liability of hitting a utility with conventional excavating, it prevents worker injuries or death, minimizes restoration costs and it enables you to work in hard to reach areas. Hydro and air excavation allows you to pothole existing utilities, allows you to slot trench if necessary, allows you to pot hole for utility poles where conventional excavation may be too intrusive, sediment cleanup for storm structures and culverts and bulk excavation for remote locations such as elevator pits and interior footers. Delaware Valley Utility Contractors has the ability to provide water and debris tankers if necessary. Our staff of mechanics in our shop allows us to minimize downtime due to break downs and equipment repairs. They also offer road service which allows them to respond quickly to any location our trucks are working.
